Nostalgia

Words are beautiful, think of your favourite snippet of poetry, a lyric, something that some said to you off hand, something that stuck with you, something so powerful that just hearing those words can twist you round and send you straight back to another place and time.

But why stop at words? A melody, a smell, a painting, a sunrise, an face from the past…

Sometimes one thing can trigger off such an overwhelming ripple effect of memories that your breath is quite taken away. This might sound so insane, but I have to write it. I feel so overwhelmed by nostalgia, pricks of forgotten pain.

The trigger for me tonight was watching a movie called “Remember Me”, something that I’ve had on my hard-drive for the longest time and avoided, probably because it stars Robert Pattinson. But I gave it a chance, and it crawl up and around my heart, flaking off strange nostalgia for poems I’ve forgotten. Somewhere in my teens I got hold of a collection of poems by Rod McKuen, I don’t think many of my friends would even know who he is, but he wrote the lyrics of the song “Seasons in the Sun”. I must have picked up the book at a 2nd hand book stall, maybe urged by my mom. However I came about owning it, it moved me. Lines that haunt me still, glimmers of adult themes, who knows, I flicked through the book now and poems I’d forgotten about were so familiar, like seeing an old friend.

If I thought
that I was dying,
and I am
            of inattention,
                         indifference
                         and the need
to prove just once
                 I’ve lived –
for someone
              other than myself,
what would/should
my reaction be?
Especially if I knew
that finally and forever
there would be no one.

An excerpt from “The Pause, Before the Going” – Rod McKuen

Reading these words, the words that have haunted me for probably 15 years, brought back a few lines of a poem by D.H Lawrence. I remember my surprise at finding a poem like this in my poetry setwork book, it seemed a strange concept to me.

I am worn out
with the effort of trying to love people
and not succeeding

Now I’ve made up my mind
I love nobody, I am going to love nobody,
I’m not going to tell any lies about it
and it’s final.

An excerpt from “The effort of love” – D.H Lawrence

I could go on and on with haunting lines, but will end for good measure with the painting that made an 8 year old me fall in love with Dali... I was a very cultured child.

Girl Guide Logic...

"Be Prepared"

This is not what I am, somehow this week has run away with me, probably because 2 out of 3 nights I've rushed straight from work to a flat viewing. I slept away my whole Sunday... blah blah, I didn't go shopping, I've been eating soup, popcorn, veggies at home - at work I've managed omlette and baked potato. I am not full, I am hungry.... very very hungry... convenience food all seems to be wheat covered - pasta, pizza, wraps, pies, sandwiches, crumbed.... need I continue? I'm starting to wonder how healthy I've been the last three days???

I am shopping tomorrow night, mostly for Daisies, I really need to make sure I'm properly prepared.... who knows what wheat-free nosh will be available?

The World According to Merlot

What a creative evening...

Finished a painting I started ages ago... here it is, as requested by loyal fan ;)

Finished a bottle of Merlot... well almost...

Received lovely compliments on writing and advice to leave day job from darling friend (aka loyal fan seeking photos of my latest painting)

Managed to bbm the word "fuckwit" so many times that my phone doesn't even try to autocorrect it... in response to another darling friend's latest dating drama. And mother darling, I'm not swearing, merely quoting my namesake from Bridget Jones ;)

Purpose of this post was mostly to show-off my latest painting... oh wait, you can get an update on my "getting to work 30 minutes early" - short answer is, I haven't, BUT I've been soooo much more focussed that last two days *chuckles to self*

Go forth and weekend dear reader, for tomorrow morning... I set forth to read to kids  in Bo-Kaap (there's more to me that wine guzzling...)

Gorgeous Recycling - Mobiles....

Getting a little obsessed with recycled art :)

"Western Art Glass creates amazing art from reclaimed bottles: building a mobile from beer bottle bottoms, or wrestling a curving leaf from the side of a discarded wine bottle. From the geometric, modern pieces to the delicate, organic leaves, his work is a sophisticated, sustainable addition to a sunny window or garden."

Gorgeous Recycling - Wine Bottle Nightlight

This is something I saw at a friend's house and tried myself - I used a blue bottle. You literally just have to feed a string of fairy lights into a bottle - rice lights work best.

Gorgeous Recycling - Wine Glass Chandelier

Loving all the arty things you can do with "drinking things"

Here's the crazy expensive version, called the Chandelini and using martini glasses:

or make your own cheaper version:

It looks like you could use any stemmed glasses - I almost prefer the cheaper version with its variety of glasses! Mmm... better hit the Milnerton Market to find some odd vintage glasses.

Sober & Lonely...

It's not what you're thinking....

Came across the most unexpected NGO.... called "The Sober & Lonely Institute for Contemporary Art "

"The Sober & Lonely Institute for Contemporary Art (SLICA) is a non-profit organisation whose main focus is on fostering exchanges and conversations between South African and international artists and organisations. Loosely based in Johannesburg and Durban, SLICA is a non-prescriptive platform with an intrinsic curatorial process focused primarily on performance and interactivity. As a floating platform, each concept is uniquely adapted to the specific project showcased, including exhibitions, screenings, lectures, debates and an online archive. The Suburban Residency is the first in a series of artist residency programmes hosted by SLICA.

The Sober & Lonely Institute for Contemporary Art has been developed as an extension of Sober & Lonely's artistic practice to create a platform of sharing and engagement between artists and organisations."

Honestly not that sure what they actually do, but they have an interesting blog, link to their main site on the blog too: http://soberandlonelyinstitute.blogspot.com/
